Or how likely it is that you will be faced with a situation where you wished you had disability insurance. Who Is Eligible

Disability insurance is supposed to keep income flowing when you are unable to work. So, it stands to reason that you must be employed in order to obtain disability insurance.

You can be self employed but the total amount of disability income you can receive is dependent upon your verifiable income.

It is not necessary to prove this income when you apply. But, if you file a claim, they will ask for some proof of income.

The Coverage and Cost

The plan has two options.

Age Band	$1,500 Monthly Benefit	$3,000 a Monthly Benefit
17 - 49	$65 a month	$116 a month
50 - 69	$82 a month	$152 a month

The monthly benefit cannot be more than 2/3 of your monthly income. For example, you must earn at least $4,500 a month to get a $3,000 monthly benefit. Obviously, you can earn more.

This is short-term disability and the benefit will be paid for a period of 6 months.

The nice feature of these plans is that there is only a 7 day waiting period for sickness and a 1 day waiting period for an accident.

But remember, you will have to show documentation to prove your income (usually tax forms).
