Disability Insurance for Diabetics
Who Is Eligible Disability insurance is supposed to keep income flowing when you are unable to work. So, it stands to reason that you must be employed in order to obtain disability insurance. You can be self employed, own your own business or work for a company. You can be on a payroll or a 1099 contractor. But, keep in mind that the total amount of disability income you can receive is dependent upon your verifiable income. That means income you have reported to Uncle Sam. It is not necessary to prove this income when you apply. But, if you file a claim, they will ask for some proof of income. Two Types of Disability Insurance We have short term coverage that would go into effect within days after an injury or illness and pay you for up to six months at a time. There is also long or longer term disability that pays benefits for years or up to age 65. These plans are more expensive but offer a lot more protection. The Coverage and Cost The short term plan has two options.
The monthly benefit cannot be more than 2/3 of your monthly income. For example, you must earn at least $4,500 a month to get a $3,000 monthly benefit. Obviously, you can earn more. This is short-term disability and the benefit will be paid for a period of 6 months. The nice feature of these plans is that there is only a 7 day waiting period for sickness and a 1 day waiting period for an accident. But remember, you will have to show documentation to prove your income (usually tax forms). You can apply for short term disability using one of two methods. 1.
